Council Approves 2020 Tax Supported Capital Budget

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

Council has recently approved the City’s 2020 Tax Supported Capital Budget.

This approval supports a $244M million gross in capital infrastructure projects in addition to approved capital projects in 2019, resulting in a gross 2020 capital budget of $397.7M. An increase in capital funding from property taxes equates to an increase in the operating budget of 0.87 per cent or $7.545 million. This represents an increase of approximately $31 per year on an average household.

Chedoke Creek Sewage Spill – Statement By Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

As has recently been reported, an undetected flow of combined stormwater and sewage was spilled into Chedoke Creek due to a partially open overflow gate at the King Street West Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tank from January 28, 2014 to July 18, 2018.

As soon as the partially open gate was discovered, City staff immediately closed and secured the gate, reported the spill to the Ministry of the Environment and began cleanup efforts.

$100 Million DHL Development Coming to Hamilton Airport

DHL Express is investing $100 million CAD to expand its existing gateway at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

This is the second recent major investment at Hamilton Airport following Panattoni International’s announcement of 1.6 million square feet of warehouse and industrial space in October.

Hamilton LRT Construction Relocation Work Underway

This fall, the City of Hamilton has begun initial underground relocation of services in advance of LRT construction.

LRT is currently out to tender with a successful construction consortium anticipated to be selected by Metrolinx in the spring of 2020.

Hamilton Climate Change Event with Diane Saxe

As part of a commitment to lead the fight against Climate Change, Councillors from Wards 1, 2, 3 & 8 hosted Dianne Saxe on November 5, 2019. Dianne, an International Lawyer and former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario spoke about best practices in Canadian cities and the steps municipalities must take in order to deal with the climate emergency.

Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko Moves To Include Internal Bid and Bi-Weekly Landfill Waste With Next Collection Contract

Hello, Ward 8 Neighbours!

Today, Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko introduced a motion for an internal City of Hamilton bid and the inclusion of an option for bi-weekly landfill waste collection to be included with the next City of Hamilton waste collection contract.

Councillor Danko’s motion was included on today’s Public Works Committee agenda as a Notice of Motion and will be debated for a vote at the next Public Works Committee meeting on November 18th, 2019.

An Arena, Concert Hall and Convention Centre – What to Do About Hamilton’s Aging Sports and Entertainment Venues?

The City of Hamilton is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of our City’s aging sports and entertainment venues (First Ontario Centre, Hamilton Convention Centre and First Ontario Concert Hall).

Council’s direction to staff was to look at utilization of development opportunities to fund revitalization of these assets.
