Climate Change is Costing City of Hamilton Taxpayers – Are Carbon Offset Revenue Sources Available for Ontario Municipalities?

Right now climate change mitigation is costing City of Hamilton taxpayers tens of millions of dollars every year – with no way to predict what our City’s overall exposure may be in the future.

Further, the City of Hamilton has declared a Climate Emergency with a mandate to achieve net-zero carbon emissions before 2050. Reaching this goal will require investment in technology and systems that help Hamilton transition to a net-zero carbon economy.

Hamilton taxpayers should not have to foot the bill to mitigate and address the impacts of climate change – these costs should be borne by the carbon industry and those who are generating wealth from the burning of fossil fuels.

The previous term of Council provided direction that landfill garbage will continue to be picked up on a weekly basis.

However, there are significant cost saving opportunities for Ward 8 taxpayers if landfill garbage diversion strategies are considered – including bi-weekly landfill garbage collection and/or a change to clear landfill garbage bags.
