Community Gardens Declared an Essential Service

This article from April 27 has information concerning the recent provincial announcement announcing community gardens as an essential source of fresh food.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

The Province of Ontario has taken the necessary steps in order to declare community gardens an “essential source of fresh food” for people, especially those who are food insecure.

For more details, please continue reading below…

The latest development by the Province comes as an amendment to a previous emergency order declared by the Province on March 30th, lumping community gardens with other recreational services as the province scrambled to minimize the impact of COVID-19.

Although the province is allowing community gardens to re-open, it is up to municipalities to address, prepare, and plan safety measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

As of this writing, Hamilton Public Health and the Emergency Operations Centre are working on recommendations, and until those recommendations are implemented, the community gardens will remain closed.

The Ward 8 Office will update residents when community gardens open.
