Hamilton is one step closer to breaking ground on the long-awaited Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, as council voted in favour of signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with both Metrolinx and the province.

During council’s general issues committee on September 8, councillors voted 11-3 in favour of signing the MOU with Metrolinx and the province. Metrolinx, the province’s transportation agency, will own the project and have the final say in selecting its operator. Both the provincial and federal governments committed $1.7 billion each to finance the project.
City council’s interest in LRT dates back to 2007, when it used a Metrolinx grant to do an environmental assessment. The project, which would run alternately down King and Main streets from McMaster University to Eastgate Square, is part of the BLAST network, which would see rapid transit eventually stretch throughout the city, including Ward 8 where the “A” line would stretch from Hamilton Harbour to John C. Munro Airport through parts of the ward.
Hamilton City Council will still need to ratify the MOU vote at the September 15 Council meeting. Following that vote, according to CBC Hamilton, Metrolinx and the city will restart a joint LRT office.
