COVID-19 Taxes, Creativity and Charitable Donations (May 6): A Message from Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko

A message from Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko about the COVID-19 pandemic in Hamilton – a discussion on municipal taxes and supports for municipalities, creativity at home and charitable donations.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

Eight weeks into COVID19 and it has finally been a bit of a slow week!

At the time of writing (9:00am on May 6th, 2020) there are now 460 cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton with 21 deaths (5%) and 59 hospitalizations (13%).

The number of new daily cases of COVID19 in Hamilton seems to have stabilized, directly because of your efforts to practice physical distancing and stay home.

Together we really are flattening the curve!

However, we are still seeing new cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton, and there is a very serious concern about a second wave of infections if we relax restrictions too quickly – but there are genuine reasons to be optimistic.

Municipal Taxes and Financial Support for Canadian Municipalities

This week I joined Scott Radley on AM900 CHML for an in depth discussion about City of Hamilton municipal taxes, what supports are needed for Canadian cities from both the provincial and federal governments and some of the differences between Canada and the complete failure of government in responding to COVID19 that we’re seeing in the United States.

Artists and Creativity

In this week’s newsletter we have two features to help you feel connected and creative at home.

We’d love for you to share what you’re up to too!

Just send us a photo or social media link by email to, or use the tag #Ward8Art on Twitter.

One of my personal favourite memes from this week’s social media feed is this fun auto-tune remix of Premier Doug Ford singing “Bunch of Yahoos”.

Physical Activity and Support for Local Charities

On June 13 I will be joining City of Hamilton Team Captain and next-door’s Ward 7 Councillor Esther Pauls for a 5km (physically separated) run in support of Hike for Hospice 2020.

This year I signed up our whole family to run (welcome to Mr. Danko’s gym class kids!) – if you would like to sponsor us and support the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice – please click here to donate directly!

Thank-you for your support Ward 8!

Local charities and social support agencies are really struggling to raise adequate funds to maintain operations these days – there are also many other organizations that could use your help too – click here to learn more.
