This new coronavirus is part of a family of viruses that can cause a wide range of illnesses including the common cold, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndroms (SARS) and Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

On January 22, Ontario’s Ministry of Health declared that the Coronavirus is a Disease of Public Health Significance, meaning that the local Medical Officer must be notified immediately of any individuals suspected of carrying the Coronavirus.

With the current situation, Hamilton Public Health Services (PHS) has established regular meetings with a core group of staff to monitor and update on the situation and make any needed preparations. This also includes meetings with health partners within the city.

While the risk to the public is low at this time, it is flu season and it is recommended you take necessary respiratory precautions when interacting with others.

If you are ill and have travelled to the affected area, you are asked to self-isolate at home and call the on-call Infectious Disease staff as soon as possible or the on-call Medical Officer of Health after hours – both can be reached through the city phone line at 905-546-2424.
