Keeping the Fun Going this Winter at Bruce Park

This article, from December 21, salutes the man keeping the fun going all winter long at Bruce Park.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

The Ward 8 Office recently brought you an article about a fundraiser taking place in the Centremount Neighbourhood, where residents are holding a GoFundMe to raise funds for a community snowblower.

That snowblower will help ease the workload for Ted, the volunteer who keeps the rink running at Bruce Park.

For more details, please continue reading below…

For the past 25 years, Ted has carried on the volunteer tradition of making and maintaining the Bruce Park Outdoor Ice Rink…with a little help from some friends who also take the time to volunteer.

Ted took over from Brian many years ago. Brian taught Ted a few handy techniques, and still occasionally pops by to check on things and catch-up.

Although Ted has been maintaing the rink for over 25 years, sound advice he received from Brian many moons ago are still being used today, modern technology and all:

“Brian taught me one important trick that I use all the time. Shoot the water straight up in the air. It’s super cooled and becomes ice as it hits the ground. Recently Dave made a Zamboni or a “rink rake”. It is an amazing contribution to the construction and quality of the ice. My kids and now my grandkids enjoy playing hockey there. It’s a great community builder. Friends are made at ‘the good ol’ hockey game’.”

We are very grateful to have such wonderful community-minded neighbours, such as Ted, who give their time and expertise to benefit their community.

Happy skating everyone!
