Leaf and Yard Waste Collection on Hold

Curbside pick-up of leaf and yard waste has been suspended until further notice. Continue reading to find out why and what you can do to dispose of your leaf and yard waste.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

Curbside pick-up of leaf and yard waste was suspended on March 24th, 2020 until further notice.

As we are heading into warmer spring weather when we are all outside tidying up our lawns and property, we recognize that the suspension of leaf and yard waste pickup is a major inconvenience for Ward 8 residents.

We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience, continue reading below…

Why Was Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Suspended?

Many Ward 8 residents have contacted our office with concerns about the suspension of curbside leaf and yard waste collection.

We know this is frustrating – I have quite a few full bags of leaf and yard waste sitting beside my house right now too!

The City’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), a team comprised of the City Manager, General Managers and senior staff are working hard to make sure that the City of Hamilton is following Provincial and local public health instructions while keeping essential services coordinated and running.

Some services are being limited and resources are being adjusted during the COVID19 pandemic.

The City of Hamilton collects four waste streams: landfill garbage, blue box recycling, green bin organics and leaf and yard waste.

In order to maintain collection of landfill garbage, blue box recycling and green bin organics, the EOC team unfortunately reached the decision that due to the availability of labour and uncertainties during the COVID19 crisis, it would not be possible to maintain weekly collection of all four waste streams.

It was determined that the temporary suspension of leaf and yard waste collection would have the lowest impact on residents and public health.

Hamilton City Council and the EOC are aware of this inconvenience and will reinstate collection as soon as conditions exist to do so.

What Can I Do With My Leaf and Yard Waste?

Leaf and yard waste is accepted at City of Hamilton Community Recycling Centres free of charge.

There are two Community Recycling Centres that best serve Ward 8 residents:

Hamilton Mountain Community Recycling Centre: 37 Kilbride Road

Kenora Avenue Community Recycling Centre: 460 Kenora Avenue

If you are going down to dispose of your yard waste at peak times like the weekend or later in the afternoon, the lines at the Kenora Avenue centre are usually much shorter!

Help Keep Waste Collectors Healthy

The City of Hamilton waste collection crews are still out on the streets, picking up green bins, blue boxes and garbage. While crews have their own health and safety procedures in place, residents are asked to help protect them on the job:

  • Place used tissues and napkins in the garbage, rather than the green bin.
  • Please use liner bags (either paper or certified compostable plastic) in the green bin.
  • Please ensure that all material placed in garbage bins is bagged, not kept loose.
  • Please follow the advice of Public Health and keep a physical social distance of at least two metres from waste collection staff.

These steps will help protect the health of crews who handle thousands of bins, bags and boxes each week.
