As part of the City of Hamilton’s Vision Zero‘s goal to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities among all road users on city streets, the City of Hamilton is reducing the speed limit on a neighbourhood to neighbourhood basis, including many in Ward 8.

Back in 2019, Hamilton City Council directed city staff to start reducing the posted speed limits in residential neighbourhoods across the city. The changes are now starting to arrive around Ward 8.
With this in mind, you will start to see changes in your neighbourhoods over the next three years, where residential streets will be reduced to 40 km/hr from 50 km/hr and school zones will be reduced to 30 km/hr. The City has created an interactive map showing which neighbourhoods are part of the project.

Speed is a significant contributing factor in collisions in our city and is directly correlated to the severity of the collisions and injuries.
The graph below showcases the risk of fatal pedestrian injury based on vehicle speed. Reducing speed limits by 10 km/hr in areas concentrated with vulnerable populations such as school zones significantly reduces the risk of serious injury and fatality.
Phase 1 of the speed reductions in Ward 8 neighbourhoods includes the Balfour, Rolston and Ryckman neighbourhoods.

In the cases of Balfour, Rolston and Ryckman neighbourhoods, Phase 1 of the reductions has (or will) take place in 2020. As you can see in the photos above, the roadways within the black dashed lines will be 40km/hr, the roadways shown in the blue dotted lines will be 30km/hr school zones.
Phase 2 of the project for the 2020/21 year will involve the Allison, Yeoville, Buchanan and Gourley neighbourhoods, with the remainder of neighbourhoods being phased in to the project in the 2021/22.
