The Planning Committee and Planning and Economic Development Department have capped an excellent 2024 by highlighting department initiatives and international recognition.

Planning Committee received 229 reports over the past calendar year, while participating in 48 Public Meetings and various proposals, developments and initiatives. The Committee also provided responses to the province in regards to both Bill 165 and Bill 185, as well as the New Provincial Planning Statement and ADU Ontario Regulation.
The Planning Committee also had significant initiatives such as:
- Updates to the Low Density Residential Zones
- Rental Housing Protection Policy including updates to the by-laws
- Expanding administrative penalties for Municipal Law Enforcement
- Biodiversity Action Plan
- Updates to various licensing by-laws
- Draft framework for evaluating Urban Boundary Expansion applications
- Amending the property standards by-law respecting AC units
- New Growth Management fees focusing on cost recoveries as well as updated rates for oversizing infrastructure
- Green Building Standards
- 1st Market and Land Supply Monitoring report
- Fruitland-Winona Block 1 Servicing Strategy
Applications
- Over 600 development applications and heritage permits received
- Approximately 900 zoning verifications
- 23 heritage designations
- Achieved 1 Billion dollars in building permit value in August
Recognition/Achievements
- Site Selection Magazine once again named Hamilton one of Canada’s Top 20 Investment Locations.
- Economic Development received a 2024 PlanON Award from the Ontario Professional Planners Institute for Hamilton’s Environmental Remediation and Site Enhancement Community Improvement Plan.
- Judy Lam was named the Brownfielder of the Year by the Canadian Brownfields Network. The award recognizes Judy’s decade of service working to revitalize brownfield sites in Hamilton.
- Hamilton’s Climate Action Strategy and associated City commitment to implement the plan – won Hamilton national recognition through the World Wildlife Fund’s ‘One Planet City Challenge’.
- Lucas Mascotto-Carbone, was the recipient of the 2024 Merit Award – Report or Study (Public) from the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians Conference for the discussion paper on Farm Labour Residences. The City of Hamilton was also named Employer of the Year in the Public Sector/Municipal category.
- In February, Hamilton was honored as the Festival & Events Ontario, Municipality of the Year, a recognition that celebrates the best in municipal leadership and community and tourism partnerships across the province.
- Festival and Events Ontario honoured the Re-enactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek as a Top 100 Festival & Event. The 2024 event in June, saw over 10,600 attendees participate and learn about history through Indigenous games, a 19th century encampment, demonstrations, entertainment, and food at the Battlefield Museum and National Historic Site.
- Festival and Events Ontario honoured Hamilton Winterfest as a Top 100 Festival & Event. The event, which took place in February 2024, is produced by the City of Hamilton and Cobalt Connects Creativity.
- The 110th Grey Cup and the 2023 Grey Cup Festival, received Sport Tourism Canada’s prestigious PRESTIGE Award for Canadian Event of the Year (budget over $1 million) which highlights the festival’s success, which drew 223,216 attendees and 33,835 visitors to the, resulting in approximately $20.8 million in visitor spending., received Sport Tourism Canada’s prestigious PRESTIGE Award for Canadian Event of the Year (budget over $1 million) which highlights the festival’s success, which drew 223,216 attendees and 33,835 visitors to the, resulting in approximately $20.8 million in visitor spending.
- Magnolia Hall received an Honorable Mention in the 2024 Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) Awards – Heritage Architecture.
