Red Hill Valley Parkway Construction Update Spring 2019

Hamilton Red Hill Valley Closure

Hello, Ward 8 Neighbours!

As you may know the Red Hill Valley Parkway is being resurfaced between the Queen Elizabeth Way and the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway.

In addition to new high-quality asphalt, the RHVP resurfacing project will bring additional safety enhancements to the parkway, including 10 km of new steel guiderails with reflectors, bright durable lane markings, rumble strips, and more.

When will Construction begin?

The work begins Tuesday May 21 in the northbound (downbound) lanes at approximately 9:00pm.

All northbound (down bound) lanes will be completely closed between the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway at Mud St/Stone Church Road and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) for approximately three weeks.

Construction on the southbound (up bound) side will begin in mid-June and will also include a complete closure that will last for approximately three weeks.

The exact start-date for the southbound side will be announced 5-7 days before it begins. After the southbound lanes are complete, crews will resurface the ramps at Mud Street/Stone Church Road.

Detours and Traffic

A map of detours can be found on the Project Website www.hamilton.ca/redhill

Approximately 70,000 cars use the RHVP each day. Given the parkway will be completely closed in one direction at a time throughout construction, 35,000 cars will be re-routed onto the emergency detour route or other streets in Hamilton.

The City of Hamilton will be monitoring traffic in real time and will make changes to signal timings to avoid serious traffic gridlock around the City during construction, wherever possible.

Specifically, traffic signal timing will be adjusted along the main detour route, near ramp locations and in key corridors based on construction staging. The City is also making changes to the lane markings and signal timings at the Mud St and Upper Centennial intersection to accommodate additional traffic.

Despite our best efforts, significant traffic disruptions will be inevitable. If at all possible, please avoid travel in the areas near the RHVP, especially at the beginning of the scheduled closures.

Where can I find more information?

For more information you can visit the Project Website. It is a dedicated website that has been developed for the RHVP resurfacing project. It includes project timelines, information about road closures, maps of detours, frequently asked questions, notes about impacts to HSR, info about paving operations, and more. The City of Hamilton will be providing daily updates on Twitter

The Canadian Open

All southbound (up bound) lanes on the RHVP will remain open from June 3 to June 9, 2019 to accommodate the Canadian Open and related concerts and events.
