More Hamiltonians want to recycle

According to a recent online study of over 5,500 people and focus groups representing local businesses, multi-residential residents and single-family homeowners this past January and February found that Hamiltonians would recycle more if additional materials were included in blue boxes, such as styrofoam and black plastic, and if the entire process was simplified. The study also found that the city needs to educate its citizens better when it comes to recycling.

Staff look to ban plastic water bottles at municipal facilities

This article from August 27 contains information about a proposed study to look at reducing single-use plastics within the City of Hamilton.

The City of Hamilton will be looking into a potential ban on the sale of plastic water bottles at city facilities as a way to reduce Hamilton’s waste stream, amongst other initiatives presented at the latest Waste Management Advisory Committee.

City considering price increase on single-use plastics to encourage more recycling

A draft strategy, which could charge higher prices for single-use plastic containers or cups at city facilities, will be part of a study on ways the City can reduce waste and the flow of those products to municipal waste facilities.

Hamilton City Council Votes to Add $21 Million In Additional Taxpayer Costs to Waste Collection Contract

Hamilton taxpayers will be paying an additional $21 million dollars for waste collection starting in 2021.

Some or all of this cost increase could potentially have been avoided through bi-weekly colleciton of landfill waste or by bringing all collection services in-house.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

In November 2019, I proposed two potential cost saving measures for the upcoming waste collection contract:

1. Consideration of bi-weekly collection of landfill waste.
2. Bring all waste collection services in-house.

In a close vote (losing by one) both these potential cost saving measures were rejected by the majority of Hamilton City Council.

As a result, Hamilton taxpayers will now be paying an additional $21 million dollars towards waste collection between 2021 and 2028.
