The City of Hamilton has announced that effective October 31, it will no longer sell paper tickets or passes, transitioning exclusively to the PRESTO system. Residents who still have valid tickets or passes will have until December 31, 2020 to use them.

On July 17, the City approved the removal from circulation of paper bus tickets, after City Council voted in favour of implementing the PRESTO fare card system, effectively replacing paper tickets and the monthly pass system.

This past weekend, the City took to social media to remind residents that the City’s paper ticket & pass system was coming to an end.

PRESTO is an electronic fare system that allows transit users to pay for their journey quickly, easily and securely. PRESTO works across local transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and Ottawa, including GO Transit, making paying for your trip simple and convenient.

With paper tickets and passes becoming obsolete as of December 31, the Ward 8 Office wants to remind residents who opt to use transit to purchase their PRESTO card as soon as possible to avoid any potential disruptions to their travels.

You can acquire a card in one of the following 3 ways:

  1. In-person: Visit the HSR ticket office at 36 Hunter St. GO Station, City Hall or Municipal Service Centres in Dundas, Ancaster, or Stoney Creek. You can also visit any Shopper’s Drug Mart or Fortinos location in Hamilton. View these locations on a map.
  2. Website: Your card will be mailed to you within 7-10 business days. You can create a My PRESTO Account or be without an account.
  3. By Phone 1-877-378-6123

The PRESTO card has an initial fee to the rider of $6 (HST included).

An alternative for some transit users may be PRESTO E-tickets.

The PRESTO E-Tickets are a new, convenient and touchless way to pay your transit fare that is now available for HSR customers. Tickets can be purchased, activated and displayed for payment by an individual on their smartphone.

E-tickets are the ideal fare payment type for:

  • Occasional riders
  • Visitors
  • Group travel for multiple passengers

PRESTO E-Tickets are easy to use
Buy your E-Ticket using the PRESTO E-Ticket app (Android users click here) on your smartphone before you travel. Then, before you board, activate your E-Ticket with your smartphone. Once you board, the E-Ticket is your proof of payment so make sure you have it displayed on your smartphone when you board to show the driver.

PRESTO E-Tickets are currently only available for DRT and HSR. They are valid for travel on a single transit system and do not count towards any loyalty programs, discounted transfers or co-fares that may be in place for PRESTO card users.
