Ward 8 Complete Streets Update

This post, from December 6, has information on temporary calming measures to be introduced this week.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

The Ward 8 office has received word from the City that after a comprehensive review the City is moving forward with temporary calming measures at six priority locations.

For more details, please continue reading below…

As the Ward 8 office has covered extensively, the City is developing a Complete Streets Report for Ward 8, which is focused on improving safety for all roadway users on residential and collector streets within Ward 8.

As part of the development of this report, a variety of traffic calming measures are being installed as temporary countermeasures to determine how they operate. These temporary measures will remain in place for a month duration, or based on the time of year, as the weather conditions permit. The measures will be monitored by the project team regularly to assess how the measures are impacting traffic operations in the designated areas. The calming measures will be placed (temporarily) starting December 6th.

The installation of these temporary measures will be accompanied by a temporary restriction to on-street parking directly adjacent to the temporary measure. This restriction is necessary to permit the passage of service vehicles like waste collection and emergency vehicles. Once the temporary traffic calming measures have been removed, any temporary modifications to on-street parking will also be removed.

  • The temporary measures will be created with construction barrels and signage.
  • Staff will monitor unauthorized movement of the equipment (barrels and signs) and are also investigating methods to inhibit the movement of the devices by the public, if it becomes problematic. Staff will be able to monitor this as part of their patrols over the Christmas break as well.

To note, the parking restrictions associated with these temporary measures may not be reflective of any changes to on-street parking that would accompany permanent installations depending on the final designs.

As always, the City is welcoming your feedback regarding these installations and their impacts on your street. The project webpage can be accessed through the following link; https://engage.hamilton.ca/ward8completestreets.
