Hello, Ward 8 Neighbours!

Today, Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko introduced a motion for an internal City of Hamilton bid and the inclusion of an option for bi-weekly landfill waste collection to be included with the next City of Hamilton waste collection contract.

Councillor Danko’s motion was included on today’s Public Works Committee agenda as a Notice of Motion and will be debated for a vote at the next Public Works Committee meeting on November 18th, 2019.

For more details, please continue reading below.

To be clear – green bin (where all the smelly garbage goes) would still be picked up every week as it is now. Recycling and yard waste would also still be picked up every week as they are now.

The only change is landfill waste which would go from one bin every week to two bins every two weeks.

This is a relatively minor change that will not effect the vast majority of households in any way.

However, this one change results in potential savings of $21 million tax dollars over the seven year collection contract and an estimated $63 million tax dollars worth of landfill space saved due to increased diversion.

Statement by Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko

The City of Hamilton has made tremendous progress in our waste management streams from the introduction of blue box recycling in the 90’s to the more recent organic waste green bin program.

However, City of Hamilton taxpayers are now facing significant property tax hikes in 2020 and beyond.

As a Council, I believe we have a duty to taxpayers to identify savings in our budgets – even if difficult choices must be made.

My intention with this motion is not to open the debate over the merits of bi-weekly landfill waste collection. I am simply asking for Council to provide City staff with the ability to release the next waste collection RFP with an option for an internal City bid and an option for bi-weekly collection of landfill waste.

Once we receive market pricing back, we can make an informed decision on the best course of action.

It is also important to note that the bi-weekly collection would only apply to landfill waste – all other recycling, yard and organic waste would continue to be collected weekly.
