THE CITY OF HAMILTON’S 2024 PROPOSED TAX OPERATING AND CAPITAL BUDGET
A Message from Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko
As this year’s Budget Chair, I am pleased to share Hamilton City Council’s current 2024 municipal property tax budget position:
2.7% for core city services – roads, garbage, snow clearing, recreation, parks, emergency services etc.
1.6% towards an unprecedented new $20 million dollar investment in housing & homelessness initiatives.
3.6% due to provincial downloading by the Ford government.
I understand that Ward 8 residents are struggling to pay their bills and the significant impact that any tax increase will have.
Hamilton’s initial 2024 budget projection was a 14.2% tax increase. By utilizing all available City of Hamilton reserve funds and debt financing, Hamilton’s property tax budget position was reduced from 14.2% to our current 4.3% position.
Unfortunately, due to the Ford Provincial Government, an additional 3.6% will be required from Hamilton taxpayers to pay for Provincial programs, policies and responsibilities.
Over the next several weeks Hamilton Council will review in detail all requests for additional funding and 2024 budget pressures before the budget is finalized in February.
I hope residents will share their thoughts and join me for the “Ward 8 Taxpayer’s Townhall” on January 31st to discuss the 2024 budget in person.
Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko
