Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,
A number of months ago, the Ward 8 office received an email from a constituent concerned about the tired state of the Skating Centre attached to Dave Andreychuk Arena.
Thanks to that email, the office engaged with facilities staff about this issue, and with a funding commitment facilitated through the Ward 8 area rating reserve, came up with a Ward 8 maintenance priority list.
For more details, please continue reading below…
Facilities staff started working have started working on the Ward 8 maintenance priority list, with the first site being the Mountain Skating Centre.
Thanks to staff, the walls were scraped down, rolled with a coat of block filler primer, a coat of primer, and a final coat of Acrylic Epoxy Paint. Window frames, doors, and steel beams were scraped and painted with a metal clad paint.
Originally, the plan was to outsource this work. However, due to COVID-19 and the availability of staff, the decision was made to do the work in-house. Staff took the necessary precautions while working, ensuring physical distancing, daily pre-screening, and proper hygiene practices to ensure the safety of all working.
With staff being proactive with facilities closed and the work being done in-house, there were also substantial savings by using staff instead of outsourcing the work to contractors. A win-win for all.
In addition to the work being done at the Mountain Skating Centre, here is a list of other maintenance projects for 2020 on the horizon for Ward 8:
- Improved lighting quality for change rooms and shared spaces
- Repainting of pickle ball lines on the gym floor, as well as maintenance on the floor (sanding, refinishing)
- Installation of 4 new handicap spaces and curb cuts to meet new AODA standards.
- Work on exterior wooden beams
- New Soffit and Fascia
- Painting of building exterior
- New flooring, service door, and furnace
- Paint building, new soffit and brick repairs
