Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,
The City is looking at enhancing the existing on-street shared connections which guide pedestrians and cyclists east-west along Bendamere Ave. and South Bend Rd.

Bendamere-South Bend Shared On-Street Active Transportation Connections
This project proposes an enhancement to the existing on-street shared connection that currently guides pedestrians and cyclists east-west along Bendamere Ave and South Bend Rd.

The enhancements will be primarily signage and pavement markings, with no anticipated impacts to on-street parking.
The completion of this pedestrian and cycling connection has a planned implementation proposed for Spring/Summer of 2024.
What is a Shared On-Street Active Transportation Connection?
Shared On-Street connections are implemented on low-volume, low-speed streets. These streets are shared facilities (cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists) and are also referred to as Bicycle Greenways, Bicycle Boulevards or Neighbourhood Bikeways.
Roadway treatments can include signage, pavement markings, traffic calming elements, as well as intersection crossing improvements. These corridors are designed to provide a comfortable walking and cycling environment and connectivity to the greater cycling network. They can also help to discourage non-local motor vehicle traffic and lead to lower speeds and traffic volumes throughout the Shared connection route.

Additionally, motorists will be alerted that the street they are entering is a priority route for pedestrians and cyclists, thus leading to enhanced safety for all road users, which will promote the use of this facility.
This proposed Shared On-Street Connection will link to the existing on-street painted bicycle lanes on Sanatorium Rd / Rice Ave to the west (via a multi-use path connecting Bendamere Ave to Sanatorium Rd). This route will also link to the existing Shared On-Street Connection on East 24th St to the east. Users will then be able to connect to additional existing cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.
