Westmount Recreation Centre celebrates 10 years

This post, from January 22, has details on the recent 10 year anniversary celebration which took place at Westmount Recreation Centre.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

Saturday, January 21 was a day of celebration and reflection as Westmount Rec Centre celebrated 10 years as one of Ward 8’s community hubs.

For more details, please continue reading below…

Westmount Recreation Centre, a 50,000-square-foot, $21-million facility, which opened its revamped doors in 2013, has become an essential aspect of the Rolston neighbourhood – and the Ward 8 community as a whole.

The original Westmount Recreation Centre, attached to Westmount High School, was originally built in 1965 but was forced to close because of structural concerns in 2008. Its current iteration, which was announced in 2009 and finished in 2013 is three times as large as the former centre.

The January 21 10-year anniversary celebration saw families and community members enjoying a warm swim on a chilly day, magic acts and an opportunity to play in its vast gymnasium with several Hamilton Tiger-Cats and receive swag from Hamilton firefighters and Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko.

Danko, who explained to the Hamilton News that his children visit Westmount Recreation Centre on almost a daily basis, says the centre offers “more programming and a lot more services” than any other recreation centre in the city.

Councillor Danko applauded the all-day events created for residents to commemorate Westmount’s birthday, the first large public gathering event since the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered all city buildings.

“I’m so happy to see the children and people here,” he told the Hamilton News. “It is so welcoming to see people’s faces.”

Danko would go on to mention that the Westmount Rec Centre is the community hub of Ward 8 along with Terryberry Library, which is mere blocks away.

“We are really fortunate to have such a recreation centre, one that is this nice, bright and inviting.”

Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko

The centre, located at 35 Lynbrook Dr., features an eight-lane pool, a youth centre with foosball table, air hockey, lounge seating, a senior activity room, a dance/fitness studio, a gym , a community meeting space and three multi-purpose rooms. It offers a variety of activities as well, such as pickeball, volleyball and basketball among others.
