The City of Hamilton Annual Collision Report provides a high-level review of collisions occurring on roadways over the past 5 years (2018-2022) and provides an update on 2022 data.

Some highlights from the Report

The report highlights the following statistics for 2018-2022:

  • One collision occurs every 65 minutes
  • One person injured every eight hours
  • One fatality every 23 days
  • One collision involved a pedestrian every two days
  • One collision involved a cyclist every three days

The report also includes a comparison of key statistics from this past reporting term (2018-2022) over the previous reporting term (2017-2021):

  • Total collisions decreased by 1.69%
  • Injury collisions decreased by 8.3%
  • Fatal collisions did not change
  • Pedestrian collisions decreased by 3.3%
  • Cyclist collisions decreased by 7.9%

Collisions that occurred at intersections were 55.4% of total collisions. Among those, 66.4% occurred at signalized intersections and 29.1% occurred at stop-controlled intersections.

In addition to the information around the number and type of collisions, the report highlighted High Frequency Collision Locations divided between intersections and road segments – six of which are located in Ward 8.

As depicted in the above screenshot, the high frequency collision areas of Ward 8 are found along the Upper James corridor. The Stretch of Upper James between Lotus Ave. and Mohawk Rd.(2) and Upper James between Hester St. and Jameston Ave.(4) see the 2nd and 4th most collisions along a road segment.

The stretch of Upper James from the Plaza Entrance to Stone Church Rd (3) saw the 3rd most crashes, with the 5th most between Blossom Lane and the LINC.

In regards to intersections, Mohawk and Upper James (4) saw slightly more crashes than Mohawk and Fennell Ave.(5)

Upper James will see road safety improvements in the near future, as a roadway audit is currently under way. It is expected that the road safety upgrades will be implemented as soon as the audit recommendations are available.
