Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,
The City is expecting the downbound lane of the Claremont Access to be closed until August or September after inspection found urgent erosion which has created concern regarding the slope’s stability.

The work planned involves removing 600 metres of the steel wall along the Claremont. Work is expected to begin in May and should take about three months, an update from the public works department said Wednesday.
The city closed the downbound portion of the Claremont after a routine inspection found “urgent erosion and slope stability concern.”
The update said the city had explored a short-term alternative to re-open the access but, per advice from the city’s consultant, Stantec Consulting Limited, staff will shift their focus to expediting the longer-term work.
The City also considered changing the upbound lanes to allow for downbound travel, but the lanes were deemed not large enough to safely deploy that strategy.
The removal of the steel barrier will allow for engineers to identify areas of concern to mitigate those risks.
Ward 8 residents can continue using the existing detour route.
Vehicles using Upper James Street are being asked to follow Fennell Avenue East to Upper Wellington Street and use the Jolly Cut or Arkledun Avenue escarpment access.
