COVID-19 Update: Updates from the City of Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton is continuing to respond to the COVID-19 emergency, and today is providing some updates for the community related to the ongoing pandemic situation.
Wearing masks for outdoor recreation activities
The City of Hamilton is asking residents to wear their masks or face coverings while participating in outdoor activities at several City recreation locations. Residents are requested to wear masks or face coverings while using:
- Outdoor skating rinks (City rinks and community rinks)
- City playgrounds and play structures
- City tobogganing hills
- Escarpment stairs
Signs will be posted in these locations next week. Residents are also strongly encouraged to wear a mask or face covering in any situation where it is not possible to maintain 2m or 6ft of physical distance (such as walking on narrow trails).
Wearing a mask or face covering is an additional measure we can take to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and keep each other safe. Currently, wearing a mask or face covering is required in enclosed public spaces under City of Hamilton By-Law 20-155 (PDF, 118 KB) and City of Hamilton By-law 20-202 (PDF, 8 KB). The mask or face covering should cover your nose, mouth and chin, without gapping.
Enforcement of Stay at Home Orders
The Province’s Stay at Home Orders officially came into effect yesterday at 12:01 a.m. Hamilton will remain under the Stay at Home Order until at least February 11, 2021.
During this time, residents are asked not to leave their house unless it is for essential purposes or activities, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for work where the work cannot be done remotely.
Quick facts about enforcement of the Stay at Home Orders:
- City of Hamilton Licensing and Bylaw Services officers will work closely with Hamilton Police and provincial enforcement teams
- Residents will not be stopped in their cars or on the street to be questioned about why they aren’t at home or where they are going
- Officers will be focused on assertive enforcement related to the Reopening Ontario Act, Emergency Measures and Civil Protections Act and City By-laws. Particularly, officers will be focused on large outdoor gatherings, businesses that are not permitted to be open, indoor gatherings with people outside the same household (except for single people or single parents who have exclusive contact with one other household). Officers will also be focused on ensuring retailers are operating safely and are protecting workers and patrons.
- Residents should not call 911 to ask for clarity on the Stay at Home Orders. 911 is for emergencies only.
- To report a concern, residents can call the 905 546 CITY (2489).
Winter Golf Cancellation
Under the Province’s Stay at Home regulations, Winter Golf is required to close. The City has cancelled Winter Golf at Chedoke Golf Course until at least February 11, 2021. The golf courses in Hamilton will remain open for the use of maintained trails and open fields.
Impacts to Construction Projects
Under the Stay at Home regulations, some types of construction activities are not permitted to continue. At this time, there are no impacts to any City construction projects, however there are some restrictions on other construction projects, such as certain types of retail projects, and the start of any new home renovations. City staff are in the process of contacting residents and businesses who have open permits for construction activities that are no longer permitted to continue, to notify them of the impacts.
