Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,
From November 1 through November 7, the City of Hamilton is raising awareness and helping residents protect themselves against what is known as the “silent killer”, carbon monoxide.
For more details, please continue reading below…
Carbon monoxide is known as “the silent killer” because it is an invisible, tasteless, and odourless gas. Being exposed to carbon monoxide (CO) for too long can result in a loss of consciousness, brain damage and, in extreme cases, even death. CO is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil, or wood are burned incompletely in fuel-burning appliances or devices.
To prevent a potential case of CO poisoning, it is critical that all fuel-burning appliances, chimneys, and vents are properly installed, maintained, and inspected annually. Because CO is nearly impossible for a person to recognize on their own, it is equally essential to have working CO alarms, which can detect the gas and alert anyone nearby about the danger.
In 2019, the Hamilton Fire Department responded to 935 calls for activated carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. During Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (November 1-7), the Hamilton Fire Department is reminding residents to prevent carbon monoxide in the home by getting all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a registered contractor.
All homes should have CO alarms installed if they have fuel-burning appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage. Fuel-burning appliances can include furnaces, hot water heaters, gas or wood fireplaces, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators, barbeques, stoves and vehicles.
Since CO alarms sound different than your smoke alarm, it is recommended to test both alarms monthly and to ensure everyone in your household knows and can differentiate between both alarm sounds.
If carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, people should leave their home or workplace immediately and call 911 or their local emergency number.
For more information about CO alarms in your home, contact the Fire Prevention Division of the Hamilton Fire Department at 905-546-2424 ext. 1380, weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm or visit www.hamilton.ca/fire.
