Public Health warning residents about phishing scam

This article, from January 29, has information about a COVID email phishing scam targeting seniors.

Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,

Public Health is advising the community of reports of a COVID-19 email/phishing scam targeting seniors around the city.

For more details, please continue reading below…

The email phishing scam is alerting residents to click on a link in an email to book a date/time to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Phishing, as defined by Wikipedia, is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information or data, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details or other sensitive details, by impersonating oneself as a trustworthy entity in a digital communication.

The City is advising the public that this is a scam and to please not click on the link. If residents are unsure if an email they have received about COVID-19 or COVID-19 vaccines is legitimate, they should contact the Public Health hotline at 905-974-9848 or phscovid19@hamilton.ca.

Currently, vaccines are ONLY available to priority groups identified in the provincial plan (presently, long-term care homes and high risk retirement homes).

For those who are eligible for a vaccine, their employer, health care facility or Public Health will contact them to book an appointment. More information is available at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/covid-19-vaccines-ontario.

The Ward 8 office wanted to ensure residents were made aware of this development.
