Private Tree Giveaway

At the March 22 Public Works Committee meeting, Councillor Danko introduced a motion for a free tree giveaway to increase the urban tree canopy coverage of Ward 8, which is currently has the lowest percentage of coverage in the City and in direct response to the draft forestry tree strategy canopy goals.

Canopy coverage has many environmental and health benefits, as we previously covered below.

The program will be funded at a cost of $2,715 to provide 200 small native trees to interested residents to be planted on private property, ie. a backyard.

This program is in addition to the ongoing City street tree program where residents can request a free street tree planted in their front yard within the City right of way.

Residents could take advantage of both programs to plant a free street tree on their front and/or side yards and a free private tree for their backyard!

You can see the motion here.

As of May 134 trees have been spoken for, meaning there are roughly 66 trees still available for properties in Ward 8. Visit the City’s street tree program here to reserve your tree as soon as possible!
