Hello Ward 8 Neighbours,
A change is coming to many of your neighbourhoods over the next three years to ensure that our streets are safe for all users, no matter how you travel.
Earlier this month, Hamilton City Council directed city staff to start reducing the posted speed limits in residential neighbourhoods across the city.
For more details, please continue reading below…

Starting this week, new signs and speed limits will be posted in select residential neighbourhoods, with speeds dropping from 50 km/hr to 40 km/hr, and 30 km/hr in school zones. The City plans to install signage in 45 neighbourhoods across the city, starting with the Ainslie Wood neighbourhood.
Speeding is a contributing factor in causing collisions and injuries, and by reducing the speed limit to 40 km/hr, a pedestrian who is hit by a car has a 41 percent higher chance of survival than a car driving at 50 km/hr.
Slowing speeds across the city also helps to ensure that residents voices are being heard and addressed in a timely manner.
“The City receives approximately 700 requests annually from residents concerned with speeding and dangerous driving on residential roads. Servicing these requests on a case by case basis is costly and inefficient, so implementing speed limit reductions on a neighbourhood basis allows us to meet the safety needs of residents quicker.” – Edward Soldo, Director, Transportation Operations and Maintenance, Public Works
So be mindful of the changes happening in your residential neighbourhood over the coming months and be prepared to slow down!
