This summer new railings will be installed to improve the accessibility of the concrete steps connecting Rolston Drive to the Rolston Community Forest and Captain Cornelius Park adjacent to Westview Elementary School.

Captain Cornelius Park Stair Improvements

The Ward 8 office is pleased to announce that new railings will be added to the concrete stairs connecting the Rolston Community Forest and accessible trail to Rolston Drive and Captain Cornelius Park beside Westview Elementary School.

The motion by Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko passed at Public Works Committee on March 22, 2021.

The $45,000 cost will be allocated from the Ward 8 Capital Re-Investment Reserve which returns Ward 8 taxpayer revenue to Ward 8 specific projects.

The installation of these railings is a result of requests from neighbourhood residents for safer access to the Community Forest trails. These railings will benefit all, including Westview students, seniors and people with mobility issues.

A portion of the existing stairs beside Westview Elementary School are located on Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) property.

This work could not be completed without the leadership and assistance of Ward 8&14 HWDSB Trustee Becky Buck who worked closely with Ward 8 Councillor John-Paul Danko toward the successful implementation of this project.

A big thank-you is also due to City of Hamilton Parks staff on this community initiative for evaluating options and making recommendations.
